John F Powell

John F. Powell, 70, of Sunbury, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2016, in the emergency room at the Sunbury Community Hospital.
He was born Aug. 23, 1946, in Sunbury, a son of the late John and Ethel (Willard) Powell. On Nov. 25, 1972, John married the former Joanne L. Hawk who survives.

John was a 1965 graduate of Sunbury High School and then served his country in the Air Force as a Strategic Command Engine Mechanic during the Vietnam War. 
He was employed for many years as a terminal manager for Sunoco and formerly worked for the First National Bank, Prudential and Scullin Oil Co. 
He was a member of First Reformed Church U.C.C., Sunbury, where he enjoyed being a usher, taking care of the offering, and serving the homeless at the churches luncheon. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 201, and the Rescue Hose Co., both of Sunbury. 
John was an avid Green Bay Packers fan and enjoyed woodworking and crafts.  

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Franklin W. and Anne Powell, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; brother-in-law and his wife, Charles I. and Bonna D. Hawk, of Sunbury; one niece, Nicole, and one nephew, Nathan.

Friends will be received from 9 to 10:55 a.m. Wednesday at First Reformed Church UCC, 160 Chestnut St., Sunbury, followed by the funeral at 11 with the Rev. Janna Born Larson officiating. 
Burial will follow in Northumberland Memorial Park, Stonington.
