Ruth Derr Obituary

Ruth Beatrice Derr, 93, of Foster J. Smith Road, Lewisburg and formerly of Northumberland, passed away Monday, Oct. 5, 2020, at her home.

She was born July 14, 1927, at home in Northumberland, a daughter of the late George and Martha (Eby) Sampsell. On Aug. 30, 1952, she married Daniel Derr Jr. who preceded her in death on July 10, 1998.

Ruth was a 1945 graduate of Northumberland High School. She was employed with various local businesses including Westinghouse, Northumberland Water Company, Northumberland Borough, Rea & Derrick, and the Country Cupboard.

She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, Northumberland.

Ruth was involved in the Northumberland/Point Township Senior Action Center, was an avid card player, and enjoyed bingo. She was a beautiful pianist, playing for her Sunday school class and in her high school quartet which was broadcast on the Sunbury radio station.

She is survived by her daughter, Terry L. Marks of Lewisburg; grandson, Dan Marks and his wife of Lewisburg; great-grandchildren, Daniel and Leigh Marks; nieces, Jo Hoffman and her husband Jack of Northumberland, and Patricia Rice and her husband Dewey of Sunbury.

In addition to her husband of 45 years, Ruth was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Clark “Butch” Marks Jr.; brothers, Bob Sampsell and Gilbert in infancy; sister-In-law, Dorothy Sampsell; and nephews, John and Bobby Sampsell.

Funeral services will be private at the Zweier Funeral Home, 157 Chestnut St., Sunbury, with Rev. Daniel Hicks officiating.

Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery, Northumberland.
