Ruth Culp Obituary

Hummels Wharf – Ruth E. “Ruthie” Culp, 84 of N. Old Trail passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 3, 2020 at her home surrounded by family and her aide for three years, Yvette Bennage.   Ruth was one four children born to the late Reuben I. and Margaret P. (Shelley) Longacre.  In 1974 she married Guy N. Culp who preceded her in death in 1989.

She is survived by her brother Terry L. Longacre and his wife Pam, three nieces and three nephews which were her “children”, nieces, Tracey and Harvey Boyer and their three children, Jason and Kristin Gemberling and their four children, Tyler, Carson, Harley and Peyton alonge with Matthew Gemberling and Marc Boyer, Teresa Longacre and Tammy and Mark Jacobs, three nephews are Timothy D. Longacre, and William C. and Lynn T. Rowe both who served as her caregiver.

In addition to her husband and parents Ruth was preceded in death by her sister, Gloria M. Sowers and her husband Tom C. Sowers, sister Nancy J. Rowe and her husband Robert W. Rowe.  

She is survived by her brother Terry L. Longacre and his wife Pam, three nieces and three nephews which were her “children”,  nieces are Tracey and Harvey Boyer and their three children, Jason and Kristin Gemberling and their four children, Tyler, Carson, Harley and Peyton along with Matthew Gemberling and Marc Boyer, Teresa Longacre and Tammy and Mark Jacobs, three nephews are Timothy D. Longacre and William C. and Lynn T. Rowe, the last two serving as her caregivers.

Ruth enjoyed bowling until she had to quit due to health reasons. Family time and the Ole 97 Johnny Cash Tribute Band were both very important to Ruth.

She was employed at Champ Hats until they left the area and then briefly at Tara Lee and Groce’s Silk Mill until her retirement. 

She volunteered as a foster grandparent helping to take care of infants and toddlers.  Children were her life, from her nieces and nephews to teaching Sunday school at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church now Christ Community United Methodist Church, following the merger with Shriners UMC. 

Ruth’s family would like to thank all the volunteers that helped to keep Ruth at home and safe; Toni, Bev, Pam, Wendy, Peggy and especially Yvette, the hospice staff and the Union/Snyder Agency on Aging.

 Friends and family may visit from 9:00am to 11:00am on Monday at Christ Community United Methodist Church, 3939 Park Road, Selinsgrove with funeral services to begin at 11:00am with Rev. Randall Bennett, Jr. officiating.

Burial will follow in Shreiner’s Cemetery. 

In Lieu of flowers the family asks that donation in Ruth’s name be made to Christ Community United Methodist Church, American Cancer Society, American Parkinson’s Disease Association, Geisinger Hospice, American Diabetes Association or Donors choice of organization as Ruth was always thinking of others.

 Arrangements are by the Zweier Funeral Home, 157 Chestnut Street, Sunbury.
