Nancy Herman Obituary

Nancy E. (Stroup) Herman, 71, of Northumberland, passed away on March 10, 2022.

Nancy was born on April 26, 1950, in Sunbury to Wenonah (Fahringer) Stroup and Lester Stroup. She grew up in Sunbury and graduated in 1968 from Shikellamy High School.

On March 22, 1969, Nancy married John W. Herman, Jr. of Sunbury after he returned from a tour of duty in Vietnam.  They were married until his death on January 25, 2020.  Nancy and John raised 2 children in Northumberland.

While raising her family, Nancy frequently volunteered as a grade mother at Second Street Elementary School.  She was the PTA president for several years and participated in the community block parent program.  Nancy worked many evenings in the concession stand at the Northumberland Acorn Little League fields while her kids played baseball.  She also sewed flags for the Shikellamy Marching Braves field show.  In addition, Nancy sewed costumes for the fall plays and spring musicals.  In 1987, she used only a verbal description and measurements to design a costume that did not have a pattern for the character of Lilly St. Regis in the musical Annie.

Nancy also held positions at the Rea & Derrick warehouse in Northumberland and at Medical-Surgical Supply in Sunbury.

She enjoyed bowling for several years in women’s and couples’ leagues at the American Legion Post 44 in Northumberland. In her later years, Nancy enjoyed making trips to Gettysburg with her friends Carol and Sandy.  They explored the battlegrounds, went on tours, and had favorite shops they frequented together.  She was always eager to share stories of their adventures.

Nancy had several hobbies, including crocheting and knitting.  She crocheted many gifts for friends and would knit gloves and scarves that she donated to children in need.  Nancy was an expert quilter.  She was extremely careful and precise with measurements.  She quilted blankets for each of her grandchildren using their favorite colors and patterns.  In addition, Nancy had recently begun learning how to paint watercolors by viewing YouTube videos.

Nancy adored her grandchildren.  She would travel to plays and musicals, football games, baseball games, and concerts to watch them excel at activities.

She is survived by her son Corey Herman, daughter-in-law Patricia and grandchildren Parker and Paige of Allentown; her daughter Jesica Kerstetter, son-in-law Brian and grandchildren Megan and Aaron of Muncy; and her sisters Suzann Reichley of Racine, WI, and Sandra Lehman of Parkville, MD.

Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, John, and a sister Barbara (Stroup) Broadt of Lewisburg.

A graveside memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, March, 19th at 11 a.m. in the Garden of Faith at Northumberland Memorial Park in Stonington.  Following the service, family and friends are invited to remember Nancy at the VFW Post 6631 along Route 522 in Selinsgrove, PA.
