John Herman Obituary

John W. Herman, Jr., 72 of Northumberland, passed away peacefully on Jan. 25th 2020 at his home with his family at his side.

Born Feb. 27, 1947 in Sunbury to John W. “Jack” Herman, Sr., 91, of Northumberland and Margaret (Hoffman) Herman.  John was a graduate of Sunbury High School in 1965. He married Nancy Ellen (Stroup) Herman on March 22, 1969 after a tour of duty in Vietnam.  After basic training at Fort Hood, Texas, John rose to the rank of sergeant while serving with the 444th Transportation Company.

He was a member of American Legion Post 201 in Sunbury, life-time member of VFW Post 6631 in Selinsgrove, and Teamsters Local 764 in Milton.

When John wasn’t working as a diesel and auto mechanic at businesses in Sunbury, Milton and Northumberland, he was an avid baseball fan who coached several years in Northumberland Acorn Little League. John helped design and build the concession stand which still stands at the league’s field along the Susquehanna River.

John also enjoyed bowling with friends on several teams at the Strike Zone (Sun Bowl) in Sunbury and American Legion Post 44 in Northumberland.

John became a highly skilled woodworker and craftsman, building furniture and working on other remodeling projects. His handiwork made many homes in the Susquehanna Valley, Lehigh Valley and Harrisburg area brighter.

John restored and modified a 1966 Ford Mustang which he would occasionally race, and he enjoyed a trip with his friend Mike to visit Ford facilities in Dearborn, Michigan.

After retirement, John designed, built and flew radio-controlled planes and drones, and would frequently start his days flying with his friends David and Jim at East Snyder Park in Selinsgrove.

John was an avid fan of Penn State Nittany Lions football, as well as the Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles.

John is survived by his wife of 50 years, Nancy Herman; a son Corey Herman, daughter-in-law Patricia and grandchildren Parker and Paige Herman of Allentown; and his daughter Jesica Kerstetter, son-in-law Brian, and grandchildren Megan and Aaron Kerstetter of Muncy; his father, John, Sr., and sister Laurene Kohler of Shiremanstown.  John was preceded in death by his mother Margaret (Peggy) Herman.

No viewing is planned, at John’s request. Friends and family will be invited to burial services at Northumberland Memoral Park, Saturday, March 14, 2020 at 10:30am.

Arrangements are by the Zweier Funeral Home,  157  Chestnut Street,  Sunbury.
