Hazel Frits Obituary

Hazel E. Frits, 99, formerly of Shamokin Dam, passed away at Buffalo Valley Lutheran Village on December 6, 2020.

She was born Hazel Elizabeth Morgan on April 19, 1921 in Potts Grove PA to Willets Morgan and Emma Schnyder Morgan. She was married 54 years to Myron H. Frits, who preceded her in death on December 9, 1995.

Hazel was a long-time member of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Shamokin Dam. She was active with the Lutheran Church Women for many years and volunteered at the Mustard Seed in Selinsgrove.

Hazel loved to travel and she made many trips all over the country with her husband. Later in life, she enjoyed frequent bus trips and finally an Alaskan cruise that she described as the trip of a lifetime. She believed in seizing the moment, and when she found out a few years ago that a granddaughter and husband purchased a sleigh, she bundled up on a cold January day and insisted on going for a horse-drawn sleigh ride. She believed in not wasting time or energy and was always on the go. She could be seen in the early morning hours walking her daily 2-mile route through her neighborhood in Shamokin Dam with her neighbor Betty.

Hazel had a wonderful gift of hospitality and she loved to host family holidays and other special events well into her 80’s. She was very well-known for her cooking and baking talents, and she found great joy in blessing her family, friends, and neighbors with delicious home-made treats at every holiday and special occasion. She continued delivering the goods until age 94 when she moved into assisted living.

Hazel is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Vicki and David Troxell of Middleburg, and granddaughters Veronica Maneval of Harrisburg, Julie Douglass (Bob) of Selinsgrove, Susan Lessman (Mike) of Globe Mills, Michele Crawford (Mark) of Elliottsburg, Angela Frits of Laughlin NV, along with 4 great-granddaughters and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Myron, their daughter Susan, their sons Gerald and Michael, and their grandson Lonnie.

Friends and family may visit Wednesday, December 9, from 11:00am-noon at St. Matthews Lutheran Church, 3249 N. Old Trail, Shamokin Dam where the service will follow at noon with pastor Vicar Mindy Bartholomew officiating.

Interment will be in Orchard Hills Cemetery, Shamokin Dam.

Arrangements are being handled by the Zweier Funeral Home in Sunbury PA.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to her church St. Matthews Lutheran, PO Box 68, Shamokin Dam, PA   17876.
