Dorothy Moyer Obituary

Riverwoods Senior Living Community has lost one of its oldest residents.  Dorothy Moyer, formerly of Sunbury, passed away on Friday, February 14 at the age of 105. Dorothy was born on September 25, 1914 in Grantville, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Rev. Oliver Bittner and his wife, Irene Felty Bittner. Dorothy was predeceased by her sister, Arline Witmer.

Dorothy moved to Sunbury at age 13. She graduated from Sunbury High School and attended Susquehanna University, where she majored in music. She was married to George Moyer for 33 years, during which time she taught private piano and voice lessons in her home.  She also taught piano and voice lessons privately in Shamokin. As a homemaker, she enjoyed caring for her garden, raising African violets, and raising her favorite cat, Tom. George predeceased her in 1979.

Since her father was the minister at United Lutheran Church at Crossroads, Dorothy continued to pursue interests in her church community when she went on to attend Zion Lutheran Church, Sunbury. Besides being on the church counsel, she was President of Zion Lutheran Women, Chairperson of the Rachel Guild of Zion Church Women, Chairperson of Zion Brass Committee, and was active in the Social Ministry and Church Women United of Sunbury.

During her later years, she became a resident of the Riverwoods Community in 1999. She was quite active playing piano for Sunday school
services, taking care of the plants in their greenhouse and watering many of the plants outside in the summer. She was also in charge of the greeting card display at the entrance. Dorothy had wonderful care at Riverwoods, both in assisted living and in the nursing home. She was loved by all the wonderful staff with whom she came in touch.

Dorothy is survived by a nephew, John Witmer, and his wife, Susan, of Lockport, New York,  and their children, Kathleen and Michael.

There will be no prior visitation, and burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Memorials to United Lutheran Church, 167 Seven Points Road, Sunbury, Pennsylvania. 17801 or  Zion Lutheran Church, 15 S. Fifth Street, Sunbury, Pennsylvania. 17801.

The immediate family of Dorothy is very grateful for the loving care Riverwoods Senior Living Community gave her over many years. Thanks also go out to the staff of Hospice of Evangelical, who cared for her so well in her final weeks.
