Vernon L Newman, Jr.

Vernon L. Newman Jr., 63, of Sunbury passed away Saturday, November 4 at the Nursing & Rehabilitation Center at the Mansion.

Vern was born in Sunbury on November 26, 1953 a son of the late Vernon L. Newman, who preceded him in 1971, and Mabel E. (Neidig) Newman, 88, who resides in Watervliet NY.

Vern graduated Shikellamy High School in 1971 and was a US Air Force veteran.

He worked as a mechanic for 38 years at the Butterkrust/Sara Lee Bakery in Sunbury and took an early retirement in November 2015,

Vern was a soft spoken, hardworking mechanic, who had a passion for music, motorcycles and hunting. His music was enjoyed by many as he traveled around and performed at open mic venues throughout the area.   He was uniquely independent, but was always willing to share a smile or laughter with everyone he met.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his sister Brenda E. (Newman) Ladd and brother in law, Jon A Ladd of Watervliet, NY, also a niece, Ashley Ladd and her daughter Isabella Ladd, several cousins and a lifetime friend Dave Whitenight.

Friends may visit from 10 - 11 am Saturday at the David T. Zweier Funeral Home, Inc. 157 Chestnut St, Sunbury, a service to follow with Staff Pastor Kurt Francis officiating. Interment will be at the Pomfret Manor Cemetery, Sunbury.
