Anne Pensyl

Anne Pensyl of Delray Beach, Florida died April1, 2024. Anna Mary was born on July 15, 1926 to Joseph P. and Gertrude (Meyer) Zurick. Her parents, brother, William P. Zurick, and sisters, Lorraine (Zurick) Yost and Caroline (Zurick) Cook, as well as her nephew, James Zurick, nieces Cecilia Zurick & Mary Carol Zurick, predeceased her. She was married to Theodore Pensyl for 56 years. She worked in her husband’s office, answering the telephone for Ted Pensyl’s Fuels until he purchased Rich Oil Company in the 1960s and then was employed part-time by Carolyn’s Dress Shop and Jayne’s Hat Shop in Sunbury. Anne is survived by one daughter, Phyllis Anne Baxter of Delray Beach, FL; two granddaughters, Trudy K Singzon, MD (Brian Warner) of San Francisco, CA, and Anna K Singzon Engelke (Bernward) of Bonn, Germany; and two great-grandchildren, Sofia Helena Engelke and Theodore Hugo Engelke of Bonn, Germany. In addition to her immediate family, she is survived by William (Mary) Zurick of Rockledge, FL; Lorraine Zurick (Dale) Calvert of Upper Mount Clare, NJ; Joseph Zurick of Portland, OR; and Mrs. James (Sandra) Zurick of Paxinos, PA; Robert (Billie) Yost of Sunbury; Lori Yost (Tom) Wagner of Selinsgrove, Diane Yost of Selinsgrove; Walter (Jean) Cook of Halifax, PA, Stephen (Wanda) Cook of Shamokin; Tricia Cook (John) Terry of Henderson, NC; and Alecia Cook of Hollywood, FL. She had many great nieces and nephews and great-grand nieces and nephews. Initially, Anne was an auxiliary member, thereafter, a member of Elks Lodge #267 and finally of Elks Lodge #1770 in Delray Beach, FL and The Sunbury Social Club. She was a member of St. Michael’s Church, when the school originated in 1949 and later became a member of St Thomas More in Northumberland, PA. More recently, she attended St Pius X in Selinsgrove, PA and St Vincent Ferrer in Delray Beach, FL. Although Anne has maintained that Pennsylvania is “home,” she and Ted wintered in Florida for 50 years gradually increasing time there until they became permanent residents of Florida. Anne and Ted had many adventures together over the years, mostly because she encouraged him – and got him to go on their first family cruise. When asked what his hobbies were, Ted replied, “taking care of Kid” (his pet name for Anne). In the 17 years since Ted passed away, she had remained steadfastly loyal to him, not once considering companionship from anyone other than her daughter in his absence. Anne was tirelessly dedicated to her family - even as a child, cooking and taking care of her siblings while her parents were busy with the grocery store, diner, and gas station. Once she married, she worked hard to keep her home impeccably clean. Many repairmen commented that they were amazed that she vacuumed in high heels and always had make-up on. She was meticulous in dress, every hair “in place”, and never answered the door without at least lipstick on. She even planned her appearance (hair, jewelry, and outfit) in the coffin, lest anyone remember her in less than a perfect state. She was seen as the matriarch of the family and looked for every excuse for friends and family to come together. She loved going on cruises, going shopping, going out to dinner, and decorating for holidays and parties. For her, “A day without going out is like a day without sunshine!” Amazingly, she was still driving herself until she was 94 years old, with nearly no traffic incidents. Above all else, her greatest joy was being with her family. Of the generous gifts that she bestowed upon us over the years, her love, and the many years we had with her, were the greatest gifts she gave to us. Friends will be received Saturday, April 27, 2024 from 2-4 PM at Scobee-Combs-Bowden Funeral Home, 599 N.E. 15th Ave., Boynton Beach, Florida. Friday, July 26 a visitation will be held at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 112 Fairview Dr. Selinsgrove from 10:00-11:00am where the Funeral Mass will follow at 11:00 with Father Cavender as celebrant.
