Jay A Buckles, Sr.

Jay A. Buckles, Sr., 85, of S. Front St. Sunbury, passed away on November 16, 2017 at Geisinger Medical Center. Jay was born in Sunbury on February 10, 1932 the son of the late Alva and Ida Buckles. He attended Sunbury schools and joined the US Army serving during the Korean War. He came home to work as a laborer in various positions at many companies in the area, finally working as a custodian for the Shikellamy School District from which he retired.

Jay loved his church, the Susquehanna Valley Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon.  He loved reading the Bible and especially enjoyed the men’s breakfasts at the church.  He was a member of the Sunbury VFW, the Moose, and was a life member of the Goodwill Hose Company.

Jay is survived by his wife Amelia E. (Rose) Buckles whom he married in 2000, son Kevin (Sandy) Buckles of Halifax, daughter Victoria (Keith) Bingaman of Urban, son Jay A. (Jodi) Buckles II of Sunbury, son Jay Bacon, brother Fred (Barbara) Buckles of Herndon, step-children: Debra Tyson of White Deer, Paul Oyster of Sunbury, Dawn Bickhart of Port Trevorton, Sharon Almond of Northumberland, David Oyster of Sunbury and Mary Tybout of Sunbury. Jay and Amelia reared three boys over thirteen years who survive, Josh, Jonathan and Christopher Renner. Also surviving are seventeen grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Jay was preceded in death by son Wayne A. Buckles, daughter Catherine Davis, and he was the last of ten siblings.

Friends and family may visit at the David T. Zweier Funeral Home, Inc., 157 Chestnut St. Sunbury, PA on Tuesday, November 21, from noon to 2 pm.  A funeral service will be held at 2 pm. with Jay’s pastor Mike Neaman officiating. Interment will follow at  Northumberland Memorial Park Stonington, Pa..
