Elinor J Sawyer

Elinor J. Sawyer, 92, of 1030 Market St. Sunbury, PA passed away at the Sunbury Community Hospital on January 12, 2017. She was born in Northumberland on September 14, 1924 the daughter of the late William and Sarah Margaret (Specht) Beck.

Elinor graduated Northumberland High School. She married the late Dean A. Sawyer on July 6, 1947 who passed on January 27, 1977.

Elinor served our nation while she was stationed in Valley Forge in the US WACC from 1944 to 1947. She worked at Wil-Hold Manufacturing. She had a heart the size of Texas, so she helped and loved the young people in the Foster Grandparent program. She was a woman of strong faith and served her church, the Catawissa Avenue United Methodist Church, by singing in the choir. She continued to sing in the choir when she resided in the Mansion / Golden Nursing Home for the past eight years. She was loved by all who knew her.

Elinor is survived by her daughters Patty (James) Mellowship of Clayton, NY, and Pamela Sawyer of Sunbury, son Michael Sawyer of Danville, seven grandchildren: Melinda Kipple, Christopher Mellowship, J.D. Mellowship, Heather Sawyer, Matthew Koveleskie, Travis Sawyer and Nichole Decker, nine great grandchildren, sister Dodie Hoffman of Sunbury, brother John (Alice) Beck of Christiana, PA and many nieces and nephews.

Elinor was preceded in death by her daughters Penny Shipman and Margaret Ragsdale, siblings: William, Robert, Frank, Harry ‘Hank’, Charles ‘Ed’, and Donald Beck, Charolette Henry and Ruthie Gelow.

Friends and family may visit on Wednesday from 9:30 to 11 am. at the David T. Zweier Funeral Home, Inc. 157 Chestnut St. Sunbury, PA, a funeral service will follow at 11 am. with Rev. Scott Koser officiating. Interment is at Pomfret Manor Cemetery, Sunbury, PA.
